Reflections of an SEO Business: Beware the Sharks!

When I first made the decision to create my seo business, I was excited and eager to get started. I didn’t have a lot of money so I purchased ‘Search Engine Optimization for Dummies’, sought out free seo software programs and spent endless hours on Google researching everything I could get my greedy little hands on. Learning about seo was fun, and I thoroughly enjoyed all of the on-page optimization processes such as figuring out my keywords, creating Meta tags, writing the robots.txt file, submitting my sitemap to the search engines and all of the 100 other things I ended up checking off my list.

By the way, if you are looking for free seo software you might want to check out WebCEO’s trial version. It will get you started on the right path towards learning more about seo and is completely free. The catch is that the trial version only lasts for 15 days. However, they do allow you to save a backup of your files to your desktop. At this point you can download a new version of WebCEO and then upload your existing files. So, if you’re willing to put in the work but don’t want to put in the coin this might be the right introductory package for you.

Once I started the off-page optimization process I quickly found out that there are sharks in the seo business. My first lesson with this was when I automatically submitted my search engine to the directories. All of a sudden, I was receiving 20+ emails a day and surprisingly, all of them wanted me to purchase different products! Now, I didn’t have money (as previously stated) but even if I had, I had learned enough from my Google researching to know that this was a BAD idea.

My second lesson with the sharks was when I started searching for link partners. Sadly, my first link partner stole my traffic through framing and the second potential link partner I contacted let me know in no uncertain terms that I had nothing to offer as a start-up, I was wasting his time and that he was dubious if my company even existed. What was a new seo business to do? Back to Google again; this time researching out the best way to find good backlink partners.

It is at this point that I found my safe haven, my home away from home, SEOmoz. Although I did not immediately purchase their software (the money issue again) I became a frequent reader of their blog. This is the place I continue to go to for motivation and advice, or when I have recently been bitten by another seo shark. I would strongly suggest this site to anyone. It is a great place to start and everyone for the most part is very helpful.

So, if you have suffered a shark attack, you are not alone. Everyone has been bitten at least once. The seo business is filled with predators, and we all have our scars.
