The Advantages and Disadvantages of Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain veneers are used for a variety of reasons. They improve the appearance of the teeth and protect the damaged teeth. They are made from a thin layer of restorative material and are placed directly onto the surface of the teeth. Veneers are made of two types of porcelain; dental and composite.

Composite veneers can be constructed directly in the mouth. Or, they can be constructed in a laboratory and then they are glued onto the teeth. These are glued onto the teeth using an adhesive such as Panavia, which is a kind of resin cement. However, porcelain veneers can only be indirectly fabricated.

Veneers were first invented in California by Charles Pincus. When they first invented veneers, they did not stick on for a long time because the adhesive used was the same one used for dentures. At that time, they were most commonly used by actors to change the appeal of their teeth.

In the early 1980’s two dentists (Calamia and Simonsen) discovered that porcelain could be engraved using hydrofluoric acid. They also found that the veneers could be improved by making use of composite resins with porcelain. This is what enabled the veneers to be permanently placed onto the surface of the teeth.

These days, because of the improved cements and resins, porcelain veneers can last for as long as three decades. Then they have to be replaced because they may be stained, chipped or cracked, decayed, leaked, or because the gum line has shrunk. They are also damaged by tooth grinding or physical impact. The costs of veneers are different, based on the location of the dentist as well as his/her experience with the technology. Last year one tooth would set you back about $1000 to $3000.

So what is the difference between porcelain veneers and composite veneers? Porcelain veneers are better because they are not as easily stained, and they are sturdier. Veneers are becoming extremely popular amongst patients and dentists alike, particularly cosmetic dentists. It is also extremely popular with celebrities. This is because porcelain veneers instantly and dramatically improve the appearance of the teeth and smile.

It is one of the best solutions for people, who have small and spaced teeth. This is something that Orthodontists cannot repair. They are also used to repair teeth that have been worn down, and thereby look old. Other people have teeth that are not positioned correctly in the jaw. Not only this, porcelain veneers can also lengthen very short teeth or fill in the spaces between the teeth, where the gums have receded.

It is an excellent choice to make the teeth look more symmetrical, even in color and shape. Another reason for the popularity of porcelain veneers is that the procedure is non invasive and there are very few risks associated with it. Though porcelain veneers appear to be a miracle treatment for several dental issues, it does have its critics. Some believe that cosmetic dentists overuse them to treat dental problems. They argue that this can be unhealthy, especially, in cases where they are used to straighten otherwise healthy teeth. This is because as much as 30% of the tooth surface has to be destroyed to apply the veneers. However, temporary dental veneers made from flexible resin are available in the market. These are also placed onto the surface of the teeth and can be removed and reused.
