Western art comes from the United States and the European countries. There are many periods of this style that people can choose from. Western art can be dated all the way back to the third millennium BC through Ancient Egyptian, Aegean, and Middle Eastern civilizations.

From that time, there has been the Classical period, the Renaissance, the Baroque, the Medieval, and the Modern Era to name but a few. This style is often, but not always, influenced by the politics of its time and the society in which it was depicted.

A favorite among many is Native American Indian paintings. This particular style brings out a lot of history regarding the early settlers of the United States and Canada. One artist in particular, James Bama, loved painting people of this early era.

He moved from New York to Wyoming to fulfill his dreams of enveloping himself in the early days of Western history. Some of his paintings that can be viewed are \’Heritage\’ (homage paid to a Shoshone Indian), \’Buffalo Bill – 4th of July\’, and \’Little Star\’ (Indian girl in a ceremonial dress).

Another example of Western art can be found within the artist Carla D\’aguanno. This artist’s passion lies with children and animals, mainly horses. \’Hoof Prints in the Snow\’ is a great example of these gentle giants and their adolescent caretaker. Another is \’Dear God It Is Me Calling\’, a wee babe in her pink cowgirl hat kneeling in the barn in prayer.

One of the most well-known painters and sculptors of Old American Western art is Charles Marion Russell. Many referred to him as \’the cowboy artist\’.

His works encompassed not only the cowboy and the Native Indian, but he also mastered the landscapes of the Western United States. In the beginning, at the age of 18 he worked as a cattle hand for the O-H Ranch in Central Montana.

It was a harsh winter and the owner had written to find out how the herd was doing. The foreman just sent back a watercolor sketching that Russell had drawn to give a description of the situation. This sketch was the catapult to Russell\’s career.

He later redrew it in more detail and named it, \’Waiting for a Chinook\’. Since that time he has produced over two thousand pieces to include \’The Custer Fight\’, \’A doubtful Handshake\’, \’The Wild Horse Hunters\’, and \’Lewis and Clark Meeting the Flathead Indians\’.

Great Falls, Montana is the home of the C.M. Russell Museum Complex. There are many of his artworks, artifacts and personal effects that can be viewed at the site.

Another famous painter of Western art was Albert Bierstadt. This artist was very financially successful for the era in which he lived and painted. Bierstadt was a German/American that specialized in romantic landscapes using the technique known as Luminism.

One of the most popular of his time, this man manifested amazing works on canvas, capturing the majestic beauty and rawness of waterfalls, mountainscapes, and valleys. Many of Bierstadt\’s pieces show the places that are part of America\’s National Park system.
