Windshield Replacement 101

Windshields are often victims of severe weather conditions, road accidents and violent public protests. There is little one can do to protect their windshield from damage due to its vulnerable location and fragile characteristics. Moreover one has no control over the unpredictable events that cause the damage. Fortunately windshield replacement is no longer a nightmare, thanks to ease of access to highly knowledgeable technicians and sophisticated techniques. Most auto glass replacements today are done by exclusive windshield replacement and repair companies. Several of these companies have local replacement centers all over the country and boast stocked up inventories to satisfy every customer’s needs. Windshield replacement and repair centres also handle insurance claims and provide service at the customer’s door step and make the whole experience of going through a replacement a breeze.

Windshield replacement process

A typical windshield replacement process begins with a technician assessing the degree of damage. Damages like chips and minor cracks can be easily repaired without requiring a replacement. Cracks wider that 2 inches and spider web fractures warrant a replacement. Other damages that fit the replacement criteria are

– There are eight or more completed repairs on the windshield

– One or more cracks end at the windshield’s edges

– The damage is present on both sides of the windshield

– The damage has penetrated the windshields bonding layer

– The damaged region extends across the critical area of vision

On completion of the assessment a certified windshield is selected based on the automobile’s make and model. All windshields manufactured today are laminated glasses. A laminated auto glass has two layers of specially treated glass bonded together by a thinner layer of Poly Vinyl Butyric. This construction adds strength to the windshield and prevents it from shattering to pieces on impact.

Next is the set up stage where components such as wipers, which may obstruct windshield extraction are removed. A specialized tool or a combination of tools such as socket snips, pull knife and hook tool is used to remove the rubber mould and free the glass form the channel in the automobile’s frame. This channel is termed pinchweld and care should be taken not to damage the pinchweld as it can affect the final installation. The selected replacement is cleaned and “dry fitted” to make sure it is compatible.

Then starts the preparation stage where an appropriate primer and Urethane adhesive are applied to the pinchweld. The quality of these ancillary materials plays a critical role in the overall quality of the installation. The installation stage involves placing the new windshield snugly into the pinchweld followed by sealing and leak inspection.

The process of windshield replacement is still evolving, many companies treat it as a science and develop proprietary techniques to have an edge over their competitors. The glass is just one part of the process, bonding material, tools and technician’s skill play a major role in the outcome of a replacement process. For high quality and safety, experts recommend windshield replacement materials and processes certified by the National Glass Association.
