There are five steps to overcoming panic attacks: awareness and acceptance; waiting and watching; taking actions; repeating actions; and, ending your panic attacks.

Awareness and Acceptance

The road to any kind of treatment and healing is being aware and accepting the fact that you are suffering from the condition. Recognize that you have panic attacks. You can’t wallow over your condition because it’s there. You have to recognize the emotions and feelings you have that leads to panic attacks. You are afraid and it will trigger a panic attack. By recognizing your emotions and feelings you will then start to accept that you do suffer from panic attacks.

Accept the fact that you are afraid. You are nervous right now. Don’t fight the feeling because it’s there. You have to accept it. Treat it like any other normal illness that you may have such as a headache. You usually recognize the pain headaches bring and you accept the fact that you have a headache by choosing to stay at home rather than work. You accept that you have a headache by sleeping on it rather than fighting it by banging your head on the wall. Accept that by fighting it, it will only make matters worse.

Waiting and Watching

Sometime people say to go with your guts and act according to the moment. But in the case of panic attacks, if you want to overcome it you need to wait for a while and watch what happens. As aforementioned, panic attacks blurs out all your ability to think clearly which is why you need to wait for a while and see what happens before you act. Acting before having the chance to even think can make the situation worse for you. While waiting, use the chance to observe how you react to the situation. The best way to go here is to have a diary you can fill in every time you have an attack so you can track your progress and be able to reflect on the things you do when you have the attack.

Taking Actions

Now you need to take actions on how you can overcome your attacks. It is not within your power to stop the attacks but what you can do is to manage the attacks and help calm yourself during the situation. Breathe deeply to calm yourself during attacks. Eat healthier foods to stay calm and collected most of the time. Talk to yourself and tell yourself that you need to calm down and that nothing bad is going to happen to you. These are just examples of what you can do.

Repeat and End the Attacks

When another wave occurs, just repeat the steps above and then you can put a calm end to your attacks.
