The New Barclays Premiership Review: Part Two

By Crispy Zebra

Fulham:

Fulham have punched above their weight since Roy Hodgson left for Liverpool. His successor, Martin Jol is doing a similarly solid job, steadying the ship and making Craven Cottage a tough place to visit.

They also had a fine run in the Europa League, nothing less than the loyal fans deserved. That said, their away form last season was shocking, and an improvement must happen to ensure they are not fighting for survival come February.

It seems inevitable that Clint Dempsey will leave, so retaining stars like Moussa Dembele and Kerim Frei will be even more important a task for Jol. Should he succeed in this task, another mid-table season beckons.

Liverpool:

Liverpool could be considered the most unlucky team of last season. They hit the woodwork over 35 times last season: a truly remarkable statistic. It cost Kenny Dalglish his job, regardless of a Carling Cup win and unlucky FA Cup Final defeat to Chelsea. Now, with Scot Brendan Rodgers moving into the hot seat from Swansea, the demanding Anfield faithful will be expecting a dramatic improvement on last season’s decidedly poor eight place.

In Fabio Borini, the Reds have an excellent prospect and potential foil for Luis Suarez. The imminent loss of Andy Carroll; be it on loan or permanent move, to Newcastle or West Ham, will be a statement of intent from Rodgers. Much more importantly is the faith that Rodgers has placed in his Swansea old boy, Joe Allen – I take him to build the midfield around the talented play-maker.

Another valuable commodity could come in the shape of Clint Dempsey: should the American sign for the Anfield Giants a true quality backup for Suarez and Borini could make the Reds serious Champions League contenders. Improvement for sure…

Manchester City:

The current English Champions. Be it through finance, Mancini’s expertise in managing the big names, or the fans’ desire to oust the hated Red Devils, they have achieved their initial goal. Now comes the really hard part – becoming a footballing institution to rival their city rivals.

In Silva, Nasri, Aguero and Tevez they have a team of top talent.

City have been unusually quiet in the transfer market so far; not that this means a host of big names won’t be arriving over the coming weeks. Jack Rodwell’s arrival from Everton is a case in point. Should high-quality names such as Falcao, Llorente or Cavani sign up, it may signal the departures of Balotelli and Dzeko (a minor inconvenience for the world’s richest club).

A season total of 89 points was highly impressive last time around: provided the Champions League doesn’t prove too taxing, I see no reason why the Sky Blues can’t match or even equal that tally.

Manchester United:

Man Utd were unlucky last season, losing the title on goal difference in the final minutes of the season.

However, cracks have begun to appear all over the pitch, with an aging squad battling to keep up with their arch rivals across town. Ferdinand is creaking like an old barn door. Scholes is battling hard, but is on borrowed time. Giggs is now way past his best. The return of Vidic is a huge fillip for Fergie, as is the imminent arrival of Robin van Persie.

Prior to the Dutchman’s arrival, the Red Devils had already been aggressive in the transfer market, having already signed Shinji Kagawa and Nick Powell from Dortmund and Crewe respectively. However, they will still need to improve the centre of their midfield – Wesley Sniejder would be the perfect signing to fill this position.

United are not the force they used to be, and will need to improve if they are catch up with their noisy neighbors and fend of advances from Chelsea.

Newcastle United:

Newcastle was the surprise package of last season.

They nearly managed to qualify for the champions league with a 5th placed finish, and discovered two new exciting strikers in Demba Ba and Papiss Cisse. Alan Pardew was also voted manager of the season: a phenomenal effort. The challenge is keeping up this standard of football – they will struggle to reach such dizzying heights again…

This could be a worrying transfer window for the Magpies. They will need to fend of advances from big clubs for their stars, without whom a collapse could hit the Geordie faithful hard. The bringing back of Andy Carroll would be an immense shot in the arm, but with West Ham moving into the market for a loan signing, Newcastle could find themselves struggling to compete with the ever-increasing budgets of the ‘top six\’.
