Top Ten Upgrades on Your AEG

New accessories.

From a new handguard to new optics there are limitless combinations of items that can bring a new look and feel to your AEG.

New batteries

This is by far the easiest upgrade. It can effect the length of play by increasing the mAH or milliamp hours. And it can increase your rate of fire by moving up from 8.4 to 9.6 volt in the nimh batteries or 7.4 to 11.1 volt in the LiPO batteries. The biggest effect though is with fuses and connectors.

Mini Tamiya 9a Tamiya 15a Deans Connector 50a EC3 3.5mm 50a Traxxas 100a So the very least upgrading to deans ultra plugs gives you a upgrade just by allowing more current to flow.

As for wiring

24 gauge wire is the standard for cat 5 wiring it rates as follows Max Amps 3.5 Resistance per 1000 feet 25.67 18 gauge rates as follows Max Amps 16 Resistance per 1000 feet 6.385 And 16 gauge rates Max Amps 22 Resistance per 1000 feet 4.016.

So if your power flows better and you get more of it your AEG will perform better for the simple upgrade of one connector or a performance upgrade of a full wire change out.

New Bucking

The bucking is one of the easiest pieces to find but with so many choices it is very hard to decide what you need. Degree is a measure of hardness when compared to rubber it is an addition, so a 60 degree bucking will be harder than a 45 degree bucking. So the softer your bucking the more hop up action you get. The spacer or nub can act more on a softer bucking and you get greater durability from a harder bucking.

Softer the better for low FPS setups under 350 FPS when you start to get above that you need a harder bucking so that it will not tear. 45 seems to be the lowest but a 55 is pretty common and I have seen as high as 80 degrees.

New Piston and Piston Head

This is the workhorse of your gun. The piston rides on your spring and comes in contact with your sector gear. It WILL get worn. There are many many upgrades for pistons from aluminum to polycarb with metal teeth and fully plastic. The piston heads run that range as will but with the extra choice of silent or normal. This is also where you can change your angle of engagement so it really depends on how you play and how long you play. If you never want to worry get a silent aluminum setup and play for the longest barring a gear box mechanical failure.

Precision/TightBore Barrel

One of the first upgrades that every player should do. Stock barrels are fine but the are inner diameter 6.08mm a typical tightbore reduces that to 6.04 creating a better airseal for longer increasing range and accuracy. You can also go as far as a 6.01 mm barrel but you really need to make sure you use a high quality BB .01 mm is not a lot if you get some dirt on a BB and then load it.

New Nozzle

This piece creates a higher compression. The piston head forces air through the nozzle and through the hopup so this piece can generate some improvement but honestly unless you need it, or if you are already doing a internals change it is not worth taking you AEG apart to just replace this piece.

New BB’s

This is not really a upgrade but when you talk performance you need to feed your AEG the right food for it to perform. The better BB’s have a tolerance measure of .01 +- so they only vary .01 mm which is fantastic. The more consistant your ammo the more your upgrades will show.

New Gears

This is one of the harder upgrades. You have to crack open your gearbox to reach them. You can chance a lot with a new gear set, including a higher FPS by dropping teeth and you can add durability by getting heavy gears. Heclical gears spread around the force so that each engagement has reduced wear. Gear ratios 18:1 is common and standard high speed is 16:1 the ratio is the number of teeth per rotation so if the gears are the same size and have fewer teeth they will spin faster.

New Hop Up Chamber

This is your feeding mechanism and the air channel for your AEG. This control all of your accuracy and controls the feeding of magazines. Replacing this you can add a few features such as a LED to go tracer in the dark and you can change how much spin each shot gets. A very worthwhile upgrade if you are having feeding or accuracy issues.

New Spring

This is the power of your AEG. With a higher meter per second spring (M120) you will increase your velocity a M110 which is semi standard should get you to roughly 330 FPS depending on BB weight So hopefully this clears things up a little bit and allow you to make a better choice on how to upgrade or what to upgrade.
