Tyler, Texas Fitness Tip

Recently, Jimmy Roberts, a trainer at the Tyler YMCA shared a great lower body exercise that can be done in your own home and without fitness equipment, called an alternating lunge. Step forward with one leg, bending the knee at a 90 degree angle. Then, with the same leg, step backward, bending the alternate knee at a 90 degree angle.

It is very simple, but this exercise is designed to strengthen the area known as the quad. Strengthening this area is vital for everday movements such as squatting, moving from a sit to stand position, and for walking.

Do three sets of about 10-15, three days a week. For best results, use this exercise as part of a full fitness routine. This exercise can be done by people at any fitness level, though certain medical conditions may be barriers to your ability to perform the exercise.

Maintaining a regular workout routine that includes both upper and lower body exercises is vitally important to a well-balanced fitness regimen. Consult your doctor before engaging in new activity to make sure you are ready for physical activity. As you engage in regular activity, make sure that your diet and nutrition are matched up with your fitness goals to help you reach your health and wellness goals. As always, make sure that you are drinking enough water to keep your body hydrated, and getting the proper amount of rest for your body.
