What is Gout

You are probably reading this page, if like me; you have suffered from gout before? Also known as podagra, it is a very painful medical condition wherein the toes are afflicted with inflammatory arthritis. Those who suffer from this condition often have red, hot, swollen, and sometimes tender joints. Once the inflammation spreads, it affects the other toes, primarily the big toe. The spread ultimately continues as it affects other parts of the body. This condition is common to people who have high amounts of uric acid in the body. Most of the patients with this condition also suffer from secondary health conditions such as kidney stones. Because of the high amounts of uric acid, other acids crystallize which then travels to the tendons and other tissues.

Reasons for the Condition

There are many reasons why this condition occurs. One of which is when the patient is suffering from hyperuricemia. Other factors include diet, lifestyle, genetic background and high consumption of salty foods. Some types of salts contribute to the increase of uric acid in the body. Once the uric acid increases, a person is more prone to joint inflammation. Problems with the renal system also contribute to the condition. In order to diagnose the severity of the condition, physicians measure the uric levels inside the body. If the level of uric acid in the body is quite high, such as 415 to 530 umol high, then the patient will have a very high risk of developing the disease.

Lifestyle is probably the biggest reason why people suffer from gout. People often enjoy eating high levels of salty foods. Along with salty foods most people have diets that are heavy in meat, seafood, alcohol and fructose filled drinks. Because of such products, the level of uric acid increases in the body and in turn it causes uric crystals.

What is the clinical diagnosis for this condition?

People who have gout have high levels of uric acids. The added uric acids in the body are deposited to surrounding muscles and tendons in the extremities. That is why upon close examination, people who are suffering from this condition have fluids and crystal deposits in their muscles. In order to combat the condition, the primary treatment includes the use of NSAIDS and other anti inflammatory drugs. Treatment depends on the severity of the condition. Once the fluids and crystals are moved, the condition subsides and pain will no longer be felt in the affected area.

Other Symptoms of Gout

This condition has several symptoms. One of which is that the affected area will always be swollen and hot. This is because the muscles are already inflamed and are already in an arthritic state. The joints that are affected by pain are the knees, fingers, and wrists. The pain in such joints often lasts for an hour to about 4 hours a day. Usually, the pain starts during the night because of the sudden decrease of heat in the atmosphere. In some other patients, symptoms also include high fever and fatigue. Of course, not all patients will exhibit the same symptoms and laboratory tests are often recommended to diagnose or rule out specific conditions.
