How to Build a 10×10 Shed

If you are asking the question how to build a 10×10 shed, then you are in the right place to find out. Sheds require basic construction skills so even novice builders can handle this do-it-yourself project.

Start with Foundations and Floors

The area in which you choose to build your shed must be level and free of debris like rocks and sticks. For a medium-size shed like a 10 x 10 plan, it will be necessary to lay a foundation to protect the structure from damage caused by the natural settling of the earth. Solid concrete blocks are sufficient, or a contractor can be hired to pour a concrete slab.

Once the foundation is set, build a floor frame with pressure-treated timbers. Securely fasten plywood over the frame to serve as the subfloor. The use of deck screws approximately 2 1/2 inches in length placed across the board every six to eight inches is recommend.

Move on the Walls

After the base is constructed, it is time to erect the walls. The components of a wall include a top and a bottom plate along with timber studs. Using a nail gun, secure the studs to the top and bottom plates at 16-inch increments.

The wall that will include the door will be built slightly differently. Instead of one long length of boards, this wall will be made of two narrower panels. The door is then roughed in between the two panels.

A layer of 2 x 4s on each side of the door way lends additional support. Likewise, it is a recommended practice to add a length of 2 x 4s across the top of each wall once the frame is erected and for the most part fully in place. To finish the walls, hang sheets of plywood or oriented strand board (more commonly known as OSB) along the exterior.

When the walls are enclosed, it is time to cut in any windows along the walls. Always cut between – not through – the studs. For a wider window, take this structural variation into account while constructing the wall frame. Finish the walls with a coat of paint, stain or even siding.

Raise the Roof

The roof is by far and away the most complicated piece of shed construction. Roof rafters must be secured to the edges of the walls and then in to the center line. The exact measurements will depend on the desired pitch of the roof, which is typically 45 degrees. Once the rafters are securely in place, cover the roof with corrugated roofing sheets followed by asphalt shingles.

Throughout the building process, there are a number of tools that come in handy but are not required. For instance, a nail gun is a tool that saves time and energy, but an old fashioned hammer will do the trick. Most home improvement stores offer these tools for as daily rentals, so there is no need to buy. These are just the basic tips and tricks to get you started on your quest to learn how to build a 10×10 shed.
