Motivation is important to have. It fuels you to achieve the goals that improve your life. More important than having it, is keeping it. Often when you start a new diet or exercise program you feel excited and ready to do the work to achieve your health goals. However, sometimes we are feeling weak, vulnerable, tired and are more prone to cravings, skipping a workout, and just giving up.

But it doesn\’t have to be that way! Many psychology studies that study people who have reached their goals of losing weight and quitting cigarettes report that often it is not sheer will power that determines success but rather having a system in place that is friendly, convenient, and encouraging.

Here are some top tips to motivate you and help succeed at your goals. Remember, it\’s not easy, but like anything it gets easier.

1) Have a support system. This is one of the biggest determinants of who makes it. Find friends and family that are supportive of your goals. If you don\’t have any people who support your goals, you can join an online group. There are plenty of free ones like meetup.com or fitday.com. You could find a gym buddy to make a gym appointment with to help hold you accountable. You could also hire a personal trainer to hold you accountable and support your health and fitness goals. Just telling people about your goals will help hold you accountable and help you not feel alone in this. You are definitely not alone in your goals!

2) Have a plan. You can\’t build a house without a plan or even write a book. If you don\’t have a plan, you\’ll be wandering aimlessly, not knowing what to eat and when to workout, and you\’re just so much more vulnerable to slip ups. Plan what days/times you have time to workout this week. Make a grocery list whenever you go shopping to avoid impulse buys. Plan meals for the week or have some general rules of thumb. For example, you could plan to have a raw vegan breakfast of a bowl of fruit and a raw lunch of a salad or a large green smoothie. We live in a society where eating healthy unfortunately takes effort. But its so important. Your body is an investment. It\’s the only thing you will have your whole life and must deal with the damage or reap the benefits of a healthy lifestyle. Some other tips would be to write down all the reasons you are doing this and all the benefits from living a healthier lifestyle and post it everywhere. Your screensaver, your door, your mirror. Also take 2 minutes a day to read these reasons and visualize how your life would be different. This is powerful!

4) A very simple tip that takes 2 minutes a day and is super powerful is to write down what you eat. Now I know you don\’t want to and you don\’t think you have the time but if you only tried it and realized how powerful of an exercise this was I\’m sure you wouldn\’t mind spending 2 minutes a day logging your food. The reason why this is so powerful is that many people eat food unconsciously. When you have to write it down, you become more conscious of what you are actually eating. People often report that they skip the cookies or other tempting item just because they don\’t write it down. When you write it down you have to face your choices and are held accountable.
