The Origins Of Christian Jewelry And Symbols

Christian jewelry has been around for almost as long as Christianity. Although today it has become fashionable, jewelry is still worn by devout Christians to show their faith in Jesus Christ. The most iconic piece is a cross.

However, the cross was not the first symbol of Christianity. It was a fish. In the Bible, this is referred to as the Icthus, Ictus, or Ichthus. It is believed that the fish is symbolic of the ‘Loaves and Fishes’ miracle performed by Jesus. He was followed by a multitude of starving people but the only food available was two fish and five loaves of bread. Jesus prayed to Heaven and the food multiplied. Thousands of people were fed.

Because early Christians were persecuted, they had to be discreet about their faith. The fish symbol was kept secret and was only known among Christians. If they wanted to hold a meeting, one group would draw half a fish in the sand. When the other group discovered the drawing, they would complete the other half of the fish. They knew then that they could trust one another.

When the Christians officially formed their first church, the Roman Catholic Church, the cross replaced the fish as the main symbol of Christianity. However, in recent decades the fish made a re-appearance in Christian religions of the evangelical type. It is not used by mainstream Christian faiths.

Even when the Protestants broke away from the Roman Catholic Church they continued to use the cross. However, unlike the Catholics, breakaway religions did not, and still do not, use a Crucifix cross. This is a cross which bears an insignia of Christ when he was hanging on the crucifix.

Still, today, crosses are the most prominent sign of Christianity. They come in all designs, colors, shapes and sizes. A cross is most commonly worn as a pendant on a chain. Recently there has been some controversy Cialis Tadalis SX regarding the popular ‘rosary beads’ which many people are using only as a fashion accessory.

The reason for the controversy is because a rosary is an item still used by the Catholic Church. The beads represent a sequence of prayers and serve as a ‘counter’ for the person praying. The other contentious issue is that a Crucifix cross is attached to a rosary.

Another important item of Christian jewelry is a St Christopher medallion. St Christopher is the patron saint of travelers. This is why you often see people wearing these medallions on chains around their necks. Many people have large versions in their cars. The medals are embossed with an image of St Christopher carrying a child across a raging river.
