What Happens to Expired Coupons

Have you ever found a great coupon for a product you have been wanting only to discover that it has already expired? This can be very frustrating-after all, how many coupons go to waste before people have the chance to find and use them?

If you have ever wondered where they end up, or how to find the loophole where you or someone can use them, this article may be able to answer your questions. The answer is this: military bases and families can use coupons for six months after they expire!

Stop throwing away old coupons that have expired-they can still do so much good for families who are in need. Imagine if you were in great financial need and received a bundle of coupons for the things you needed.

If you feel like doing a good deed and sending these coupons to be used, here is how you go about doing it. Collect expired manufacturer’s coupons by looking through your coupon folder, clipping and saving coupons you don’t use from the Sunday newspaper, and finding printable coupons online.

Sort the coupons by food and non-food items. Non-food items include everything from diapers and medication to pet supplies and personal products.

Total the value of both piles and add them together to get one large coupon savings value. If you have a buy one get one free coupon estimate the value of the free item.

Write the value on a piece of paper to include with your bundles. Place each pile of grocery coupons into a separate zip-lock bag or envelope and label it accordingly: “food” or “non-food.”

Find a participating military base to adopt. You’ll find a list of locations that accept expired coupons at ocpnet.org.

Be sure to contact the volunteer coordinator to let them know you are adopting a base and will be sending grocery coupons. You’ll also need to provide basic contact information before sending your first shipment.

In order to send the coupons directly to a U.S. base fill out USPS custom’s form 2976-A and attach it to the package. Do not list the value as the coupon value, instead write $0.

When sending your expired grocery coupons keep in mind the time it takes to mail your coupons internationally–usually many weeks–so do try to get them sent off quickly. Of course if you know a military family personally you should probably send your coupons directly to them–if you do not you are welcome to send them to the bases which you can find in directories online.

When the coupons are received, someone at the base will either distribute the coupon donations to needy families or place them in an area where they can be picked up by families at the PX or Commissary. Don’t worry about what items they may or may not use-send all the coupons you can find.

Put the grocery coupons in the mail and send them directly to the base where military families can use them to save money on groceries and non-perishable items. The post office may request a specific contact name when you go to mail your coupons.

Just explain to them that you cannot maintain a list of personal contact names because they change constantly, and that you are a volunteer group donating grocery coupons to help our military families stationed overseas. The postal worker can also open and inspect the package if that will help and verify that the contents are grocery coupons being sent to our U.S. commissaries overseas.

Addressing the package directly to the Commissary or “Family Services” should also help. Also, the USPS requests, “Do not include the country or the base camp’s Cialis city, as it might be routed through the host country’s mail system.”

Contact the base first if you are sending a large amount of coupons as a group to make sure they are still accepting coupons. Their circumstances can change on a monthly basis and we are doing the best we can to keep our mailing list current for everyone.

This is a very kind thing to do, which is greatly appreciated by all military personnel and their families. After all, if you can’t use them, why not let someone else?
