Basis of Choosing the Right Classroom Rugs

So, you want some classroom rugs for your classroom, eh? Before you sign that purchase order form, take some time to read the following questions to help you better decide the reason for this highly functional, fun and beautiful addition to the classroom.

First and foremost are, the “what” questions. What do you intend to accomplish in adding a classroom rug on the floor? What is the level of safety that you took into account before deciding to get the rug? Will it beautify the room, yet add risks for children like accidental slips because of the shiny and slippery floor? If safety was already checked, will it add up to learning or cause additional distraction for the children during class sessions? In what way can the classroom rug augment the teaching and learning experience of students? What are the other functions of this additional expense? Will it be utilized only for ornament or serve any other purpose? Answering the above mentioned questions will help you focus on your objective for getting a classroom rug.

When everything has been decided and your objective for getting a classroom rug is clear enough, the next question is where it will go? Should it be at the center of the classroom? Since it is a new member of the classroom set up, children will be noticing it from time to time and most probably will try to go as near as possible to the rug. Or on worst cases, some children may invent excuses to sit on it for the duration of the teaching and learning session. Deciding whether to roll and tuck it away or have it spread at the front or any other part of the classroom also determines the amount of distraction the children will have as soon as they take note of the classroom rug\’s existence.

Upon taking note of the questions above, the next thing that you should take note is the rug\’s durability. How long do you intend to use the rug? Will it serve as a historical part of the classroom, or aid only in a teaching session? Will it serve to help children retain previous learnings? Will it last long enough for many generations? Is the design and color, interesting and friendly enough for children, yet consistent not to confuse them when they start comparing objects printed on the rug against the things found around them or at home?

Another question is, how will this rug affect the over-all design of the classroom? Will it stand out so much that the wall-decorations the children used to explore pale that there almost all the children would like to sit on it all day? The classroom rug should complement the colors already inside the classroom, not compete with it.

Last but not the least is, how can the classroom rug contribute to the learning of the students in a fun and exciting way? It should be colorful enough to pique interest yet complements the colors already inside the classroom. It should also be helpful with the learning experience yet will not comprise the only item inside the classroom to utilize for optimum learning.
