Getting the Great Shot of Your Newborn at Home

Photographs of newborns and small infants are usually taken in sterile environments. The baby’s first photo is usually taken in the hospital bassinet. This is followed up with a couple of shots taken with mom in the hospital bed. Nobody looks good in a hospital bed. The next shots are about a week later in a studio where you get several close-ups on a white, pink, or blue blanket. While these shots are usually great photos of their little faces, they lack content and reference to life with a newborn. That is why newborn photos in real-life settings are such a fun and exciting method of photography.

Here are a few general suggestions for taking real-life newborn shots. Every household and family has it some unique and private things that they like to do as well as places in the home they like to spend time with their newborn. Discovering these places will makes for some very special photos. The real-life setting for infants is their home. When you’re in their residence, a close-up with the parents, child, and if possible, the house numbers, makes a great photograph to start a baby book. The important thing to keep in mind is that you want the photos of the newborn that will remind the parents of everything that was going on in their lives.

The crib is the most popular place to take a photo. This is where the little one spends most of his or her time. Take clos-ups of the face as well as full body shots of the parent’s favorite pajamas. Take a few distance shots from the door of the baby’s room through the slats of the crib. This is an angle every parent knows very well, when the open the door and look into the crib for that cute little face.

When the baby is not in the crib or being held, he or she may be lying in a playpen or on a blanket on the floor. Be sure to take both close-0up and distance shots of the baby on the floor. Take the distance shots from the natural traffic pattern from the room. This is also a great place to take pictures of their little fingers and hands and well as their toes and feet. When taking great close-ups of these tiny little appendages, be sure to include something as a size reference. Have them grasp a hollow plastic orange golf ball. Most little fingers are about the same diameter as the golf ball.

When the time comes for the baby to get fed or changed don’t think of this as break time. This is the best time to capture the baby’s expressions while interacting with mom or dad. The cute smiles and bubbles are what parents want to see, as well as chubby little legs and arms. A great place you won’t want to miss shooting is on the parent’s bed. This is a large soft area just made for a parent to snuggle with a newborn. If parents are willing to wear there jammies this makes a cozy loving photo. Most every infant winds up sleeping in the parents bed sometimes during the first few months.
