Personal Support Worker training is an often used term but the teachings can vary drastically depending on the situation. In elderly care, as a support worker you must be capable of monitoring their health, ensuring timely feeding with balanced diet, keeping them company and providing First Aid in cases of emergency. For those with terminal illness you need to make them feel as comfortable as possible, always keep them from hurting themselves and being there for them at all times. On the other hand terminally patients are quite fluid. Some can ask for euthanasia, but your work is to reassure them and make them accept the reality. The parturient may need education on how to go about delivery safely. This is the job of childbirth educator. For the physically disabled you may have to help with errands, food preparation and serving, doing the laundry, ambulating and mobilizing them and bathing them. For those recovering from accident or debilitating illness, they need constant care, medication, taking of the vitals and recording the patient progress.

The complexity of this work cannot be underestimated. Thus it requires adequate training, both theoretical and practical.
