There Are Schools Which Offer Studies in Terrorism and Terrorism Degrees

If you are interested in studies in terrorism or even in terrorism degrees, then I’m sure by now you are frustrated by the lack of information and relatively few options available. Now just to be perfectly clear before we move any further, when I describe either studies in terrorism or terrorism degrees, I am specifically and exclusively referring to course materials and areas of study in which terrorism is analyzed and dissected for the express purpose of understanding how to combat this threat. I am in no way, shape or form offering a guide of how to find terrorist training camps; in fact, the courses to which I will refer are solely designed for the combating of terrorist elements.

With that being said, let us dive right into the problem of the lack of information about studies in terrorism and terrorism degrees. The void of information on this subject should not be unexpected. This is a highly specialized area which is very sensitive as well. It’s no wonder that many schools do not offer programs such as these, and the ones that do don’t spend lots of money on blitzing advertisement campaigns. If you’re looking for one of these institutions, it will take some digging but the reward will be an excellent education in a field which is in high demand and is exceedingly important.

If you type “studies in terrorism” into a Google search you will get back a variety of schools offering different levels of degree programs on the subject. The problem is knowing which of these will offer you the best education for your dollar and allow you to pursue a career in this amazing field. The most simplified answer is that they can all offer you something positive; however, they may not all be able to get you to where it is you want to go regarding a career within the field of counterterrorism. This is where the search takes a new turn and the information you gather here becomes critical to the decision making process

There are very few well known higher level education institutions that dare to tackle this subject. One of the problems with these schools is that the higher the visibility of the school, the higher the visibility of the program and the more exposure the faculty has to the public. Now if you are a counterterrorism expert working for the government and teaching on the side, you probably want as little exposure as possible. Now I’m not saying that larger schools do not offer good programs, because some of them do, but what I am saying is that there are some schools which specialize in these types of things which are more likely to attract current field agents as faculty. So do not shy away from the smaller schools. Just because they aren’t well known, doesn’t mean they don’t offer a great education, especially in a specialized area such as this one.

The general rule of thumb when trying to decide on a school is to first determine your priorities. Figure out what it is that you want out of a degree program and what your long term career goals might be. Also look at the faculty list. When it comes to careers in the Intelligence Community, often times it’s more about who you know and what you know. If your faculty members are connected to the IC, then they are more likely to point you in the right direction upon graduation.
