First Aid Course For 8 Specific Seizure Types

General tips for first aid if someone around you is having a seizure episode:

– Loosen the victim’s clothing.

– Don’t hold the victim down forcefully or put objects in his mouth. This may cause injury.

– If a crowd has gathered around, reassure them and ask them to move away to give the victim some room.

– Remove any sharp items like furniture, glass, etc. from around the patient to prevent injury.

– After the seizure has subsided, lay the victim on his side in order to keep an open airway.

– The victim should never be left alone after an episode another seizure episode may begin soon after the first one.

– If the victim only has one seizure and is fine after it ends, you don’t need to call an ambulance. However, if it lasts long or if the victim is not awake after the seizure, or if he is known to have underlying heart disease or diabetes, an ambulance should be called immediately.

There are mainly 8 types of seizures and each type requires a specific response and special first aid treatment.

– Generalized Tonic-Clonic or Grand Mal seizure (No awareness):

– Move any sharp or hot items away from the vicinity of the victim.

– Put a cloth or small pillow under his head.

– Roll the child on his side to maintain clear airway.

– Do not insert anything into his mouth or give medicines during or right after the seizure episode.

– Never try to hold the victim’s tongue.

– Reassure the victim when he gains consciousness.

– Call 911 for an ambulance if it is the victim’s first seizure, if it lasts longer that five minutes or if he does not gain consciousness after the seizure is finished.

– Absence or Petit Mal Seizures (Aware):

– Carefully observe the victim and give all the reassurance he needs.

– Count and record the episodes.

– Partial Seizure ( Aware):

– Carefully observe the victim. Reassure him if he is confused and scared.

– In case of the seizure resulting in a generalized seizure then follow the same instructions.

– Partial Seizure ( No awareness):

– Speak to him calmly.

– Take him to a safe place.

– Stay with the victim till the seizure ends and he is fully aware of his surroundings.

– Myoclonic seizures (No awareness):

– Stay with the victim till the seizure ends and he is fully aware of his surroundings and is able to speak.

– In case, it is a first episode, see a doctor.

– Myoconic Jerks ( Aware):

– Calm the child and see if he is hurt.

– Again, if it is the first time, get a medical check done.

– Atonic:

– Reassure and observe to see if there is any injury.

– Check up with a doctor is recommended.

– Infantile Spasms:

– Watch for groups of episodes.

– Reassure and comfort the child.

– Immediate medical check is recommended.
