How Can You Be Most Helpful in Your Career?

Life has always been interesting when it comes to career choice. When I was younger, I wanted to play outfield for the Pittsburgh Pirates. I was only lacking talent and commitment to the task at the time.

As life goes on, your skill sets change. In reality, what you would like to do and what you end up doing can be entirely different. My first five years of earning a paycheck was as an Army officer in our military. It was a lot of fun and you learned something new every day. When I went out into the civilian world, I did not know what the fit would be. I just wanted to be with a company that had a lot of growth left. This way I could be part of that growth. This choice was not really based on talents as I was not 100% sure at the time which talents would stand out.

From 1990 to 2012, I worked with large companies in a distribution manager capacity. In any building, you have to drive results to be successful while maintaining a people always, safety first philosophy. If you don’t get desired results, it will be hard to be successful anywhere. If you do not have safe buildings, no one will want to work there. The expenses from injuries will get rid of any profits much quicker than accuracy or productivity issues. I definitely enjoyed all of my time in distribution as I worked with some great people.

After you have worked for a little while, you do get a better grasp of your talents. This does help you help your career. We all know that we have to work as we are responsible to pay our bills. Sometimes, you take what you get. The bills have to be paid.

Over the years, I have always enjoyed working with numbers but best talents may be integrity and working with people for myself. When you have a grasp of what you think you are best at, you certainly want to apply the skills. As you try to get best position for your skill set, that position may or may not pay the desired wages that you need. This can make the decision to switch positions or careers a lot harder.

There are times where I tell my kids to find a way to do what they love after they graduate from college. I am the first to say that it is easier to get your education while you are used to going to school every day. Doing what they love still has to be something that will pay a wage that will pay the bills and allow them to save some money. This makes it harder.

However, entrepreneurial careers are much more popular now than in my younger days. Maybe, they will be able to start their own business or make video games for Sony. Who knows?

Now, as I am deeper into my own career, I am very glad that I learned about search engine marketing in the late 90’s and stayed active through the years. It is hard, challenging, and fun. Because of it, I can have another option to help people and maintain integrity each day.

Later in my career, I thought that the best fit for my personality and talents was in financial services. I went out and got the licenses and training required. I am glad that I took the time to get them. It has become another way to help utilize the talents gained over the years.
