Casting a History of Iron

Cast iron is a very common grey iron that can be used to make a variety of items. Grey cast iron obtained its name for the fractured grey surface that is found on the surface.

The element Iron makes up 95% of cast iron, which is an alloy material. Carbon and Silicon are also found in this substance.

Cast iron will be brittle unless it is malleable. This material is used in a variety of products because it has a low melting Brand Viagra point, excellent fluidity, good castability, great machinability, resistance to deformation, and resistance to wear.

This material is used in pipes, machines, automotive industry parts, and other items we use every day. For example, it is used in kettle bells.

Cast iron is used to make kettle bells because it is resistant to rust, which can develop on weights over a long period of time in a moist environment. This substance is made through the re-melting of pig iron.

Often, scrap iron and scrap steel are also mixed in with the pig iron. However, contaminants must be removed first.

A few examples of contaminants include phosphorus and sulfur. Through the heating process, the metal smith will work the iron until the level of carbon and silicon are lowered to the correct amounts.

There should be not more than two to three and a half percent of silicon and carbon left in the cast iron. When the iron reaches this point, other elements may be added depending on the intended use of this kind of metal.

The iron is then cast again and the final product is created. Occasionally, this process is performed in a blast furnace that is known as a cupola.

However, this process can also take place in an electric induction furnace. When the iron is finished, it is poured into a holding furnace or a ladle.

Cast Iron was first created in China. Its primary use was in weapons and figurines.

However, it is fairly brittle compared to other materials. This makes it impractical to use when a sharp edge or flexibility is necessary.

It can withstand a large amount of compression though. Cast iron did not become widely used until King Henry VIII used it to make cannons and shots.

It was not long until English workers developed the technique or producing cast iron cannons in the blast furnaces. These cannons were heavier than the traditional bronze cannons, but they were much more affordable.

This allowed more of the English ships to be equipped with firearms. These cannons were created until the 1760s.

This was one of the most popular uses of iron after the Restoration. Soon after cannons started being developed, cast iron also began to be used in the making of pots.

In 1707, Abraham Darby developed a new way of casting the pots and kettles so that they were thinner and lighter. As his pots used less material, his pots were much cheaper than anything his competitors could make.

His methods used a new furnace that he developed himself and entitled the Coalbrookdale Furnace. The success of Abraham Darby lasted throughout the 1730s.

Later, Thomas Newcomen invented the steam engine. This provided yet another use for cast iron because it was much cheaper than the other varieties of metals that could be used.

Cast iron did not start being used in the structural parts of construction until the 1770s when Abraham Darby III constructed the Iron Bridge. Before this time, short beams of iron had been used in buildings, but not to the extent that Abraham Darby III used them.

Soon after the 1770s cast iron was used in an increasing number of inventions. Thomas Paine was even named the inventor of a cast iron invention.

As the Industrial Revolution continued, cast iron bridges became a very common sight throughout populated areas. There were very few disasters related to these bridges because they were well built.

However, the most well-known disaster is the Dee bridge disaster. This bridge fell down when a train passed over the bridge causing the center beam to be overloaded.

After this disaster, the cast iron bridges that had been built similarly to this were torn down and rebuilt. Cast iron is a common material for constructions today.
