If you are looking to get in shape, tone your muscles, and multitask at the same time, self defense would be a great home exercise for you. It can be fun, informative, and save your life.

Self defense is the art of defending oneself from physical harm. It is a human being’s right to defend their body, their property, and their freedom when danger is threatening their existence.

There are three common components to all forms of self-defense. They are techniques, training methods, and strategies.

The last component is strategy. Strategy refers to the plan for how and when to use techniques.

This is where sequences of moves are implemented, and executed. When it comes to defense, both offensive and defensive response moves are very important.

It can also be a way to build strength, train your muscles, and unlock a physical power you may not know you had. This can be done through classes, seminars, or even from the comfort of your own home.

All you need is an open area, an instructional DVD, and some confidence. Wear loose, comfortable clothing that you can move in.

One of the reasons you can experience such a great workout, both cardio and strength training, is because there are elements of martial arts which are involved. This combination of defense and martial arts is often called Mixed Martial Arts, or MMA.

When you are using a DVD in your home, be sure to stretch both before and after you practice, to avoid any injury, or muscle pain. The better you stretch today, the less sore you will be tomorrow.

Try to engage all of your muscles, particularly your abdominals. Using your abs will help you to engage your body’s core strength, and add power to each of your moves.

It will also help to flatten your belly over time, and tone all of the muscles in your midsection. Remember, the more you put into your workout, the more you will get out of it.

Going easy on yourself is not going to help you at all. Commit to putting everything into your workout and study of self-defense.

The most common style of defense is unarmed. Chances are, you will not have a weapon of any kind, so you will need to turn your body into a weapon.

What you will learn with an unarmed style is commonly called a “bash and dash.” This means you are going to inflict as much disorienting damage as you can to your opponent, and get yourself out of the situation quickly.

Learning UDT (Unarmed Defense Techniques) is about increasing confidence and awareness, not “beating” your attacker. It will teach you simple, high impact, energetic techniques to distract your attacker, knock them off balance, and allow your escape.
