Key Information To Know About Logistics

The term logistics is used to describe the supply chain involved with the management of flow of goods between points of start to points of finish. It is done to fulfill the requirements of corporations, customers or the law. This process involves several elements, including security, packaging, handling of material, warehousing, inventory, transportation, and integration of information. Individuals who work in this field are called logisticians.

The need for these systems first came into play when the military had to transport their supply of arms, rations, and ammunition with them as they moved from their base to a forward position. The term logistics is from the Greek word logos, which relates to speech, rationality, reason, and the Greek word logistiki, which means financial organization and accounting. Historically, military officers with the title Logistikas were in charge of matters related to financial and supply distribution.

Nowadays, many companies are focused around this process. The key targets for these systems are either cost related or performance related. There are five fields of logistics, based on services: procurement, production, distribution, after sales, disposal.

Procurement involves activities such as supplier management, order control, ordering, market research, making or buying decisions, and requirements planning. The target here is maximizing efficiency, outsourcing, and minimizing procurement costs. Distribution is focused on delivering finished products to a customer, which involves warehousing, order processing and transportation. Production combines distribution and procurement. Its main function is utilizing production capacities to produce the necessary products in distribution processes. The main purpose of disposal logistic processes is to save natural resources, reduce costs and improve services.

There are two main viewpoints to consider: inbound and outbound. Inbound is a primary process that is centered on the purchasing and arranging the inbound movement of inventory from the suppliers to manufacturing or plants, retail stores or warehouses. Many different types of systems that work in accordance with their field exist. Some examples of these: military, business and production.

Logistic solutions are especially needed by militaries, which rely heavily on maintaining their line of supply, who have developed implementations that are quite advanced. Integrated Logistics Support, ILS, is used in this industry to ensure a supportable system with a strong customer service element at the lowest possible cost and still in line with maintainability, availability, reliability and other requirements. Logistics officers in the military are responsible for managing how and when resources are moved to the places needed.

This became a process used in the field of business in the 1950s, as a result of the complexity of the supply systems. The ultimate objective is to manage the success of supply chains, resultant efficiencies, and project life cycles. In business systems, the focus is internal for inbound and external for outbound. Production logistics describes the process within industries. The purpose is to verify that every workstation and machine is given the correct product in the right quantity and quality and the correct time. For these systems, the concern is not with transportation, but the streamline of production.

Logistics refers to the process that involves managing supply. It is used in many fields, including military, production, and business. Overall, the objective behind these processes is to ensure efficient transportation, and in some cases production, of goods for companies and their customers.
