Everyone would love to have Chris Johnson, Ray Rice and Adrian Peterson on their fantasy team, as they’re the type of marquee players that can help you win a fantasy league. Every bit as important, though, are the later rounds, when much less touted players can be instrumental to a manager’s chances of success. Predicting a monstrous year from a player going in the later rounds can be much more difficult, though there are still some diamonds in the rough, as there are every season.

At the top of the second tier for backs has to be DeAngelo Williams. Though Williams fell back to earth in 2009 after a ridiculous 2008 campaign, he still remains one of the strongest fantasy backs around. Even in a statistical down year, due mainly to a few injuries and splitting carries at times with Jonathan Stewart, Williams still racked up 1,117 yards and seven touchdowns. Picking up Stewart also wouldn’t be a bad option, considering he had 1,133 yards and 10 touchdowns. While both should get carries, Williams is still listed as the starter.

Another solid option would definitely be Jamaal Charles, who had a breakout year in 2009 and has a very bright future ahead of him. On a lackluster Chiefs team in 2009, Charles proved to be the home run threat that they were missing, piling up 1,120 yards and seven touchdowns. In his third season in the NFL, Charles should help the Chiefs sell plenty of NFL ticket. The Chiefs did bring over Thomas Jones to share some of the load, but Charles is still the best back on the team and one who will have to get most of the carries. He also had 40 receptions in 2009, proving that the Chiefs will look to get him the ball in a variety of ways.

With Charles and Williams likely to share some of the load with other backs, the best second-tier option could actually be Ryan Grant. Coming off of a season in which Grant rushed for 1,253 yards and 11 touchdowns, he should continue to be the Packers’ go-to guy out of the backfield. Grant also is very reliable with the ball and didn’t fumble once in 2009. Considering the Packers are likely to have one of the top offenses in the league this season, Grant should have plenty of opportunities to pound it in, and 11 or more touchdowns is a very realistic possibility for Grant.

The second-tier back with the most upside, but also the most risk, seems to be Beanie Wells. In his rookie season, Wells came on strong towards the end of the year and became a major part of the Cardinals offense. The downside, though, is that the offense won’t be nearly as dynamic without Kurt Warner in 2010. This could mean that they’ll try to run Wells considerably more but this will almost certainly mean less red zone opportunities. Still, Wells is a very talented back with a high ceiling.

Also with a very high ceiling is Shonn Greene. For the Jets in his rookie season, Greene was so good that they felt comfortable cutting Thomas Jones even after Jones had a career season. Greene also benefits from one of the best offensive lines in the league, though he will have to somewhat share carries with LaDainian Tomlinson. But with LT clearly in the twilight of his career, there is no question who the number one back on the team truly is. Greene should have lots of touchdowns and solid rushing yards overall in 2010.

Along with Beanie Wells, Ryan Mathews has as much upside as almost anybody, though he is still a rookie. After trading up to take Mathews in the middle of the first round, though, the Chargers are certainly looking to use him early and often in the cialis price 2010 season. The Chargers also boast a very strong offense, which should translate to lots of touchdowns for Mathews. If you have a chance to take Mathews and don’t, you could be kicking yourself at the end of the season.

Other backs to consider certainly will be LeSean McCoy, Knowshon Moreno and Pierre Thomas. McCoy has enough talent to have a big season, though the offense could be hampered somewhat by first-year starter Kevin Kolb. Moreno had a nice rookie season with 947 rushing yards and nine total touchdowns and also projects to be a very good back for a while. 2010 could be a bit of a risky year for Moreno, however, as the Broncos seem to be a mess right now offensively. Pierre Thomas is also a high risk, high reward type player. When he gets the majority of the carries, Thomas is an explosive player that racks up rushing and receiving yards while frequently scoring. The problem is that the Saints love to rotate backs and anger fantasy owners.
